When was the last time you had to replace your phone? What about your tablet? Your computer?
Most of these devices have to be replaced on an annual or biannual basis. These, and many other products, are created to break down fast and be replaced often. This is called planned obsolescence. Planned obsolescence is the practice of manufacturers building a device designed to fail, if not mechanically then psychologically. Using lackluster parts with short lifespans is one method of planned obsolescence, but products can also be marketed in such a way that their predecessors become less appealing. Why should you care? This practice can have serious impacts on the environment, the economy, and your wallet. |
